Building the Future in 2026: Navigating the Commons in the Age of AI
In 2026, Creative Commons will continue to champion the commons, ensuring that technological advancements enhance sharing and access rather than undermine them. We will leverage decades of experience and first principles to navigate the evolving landscape, addressing the challenges posed by AI and shifting technological environments.
The Evolving Landscape of Sharing
The open-sharing landscape has undergone significant changes. AI advancements and technological shifts have raised concerns among creators, who now question the exploitation of their work through open access. Those bound by contractual obligations may feel their contributions are being extracted without recognition or reciprocity. Communities preserving culture and representation face a dilemma: allow extraction or risk exclusion. Simultaneously, the trustworthiness of information is under scrutiny, making it harder for us to discern reliable sources.
The Imperative of Action
inaction threatens the very essence of the commons. The public good, which benefits us all, risks atrophy and eventual disappearance. Yet, maintaining the status quo is not an option. We must strike a new balance, safeguarding knowledge access, empowering communities, and exploring conditional access as a countermeasure to unchecked commodification.
Our Strategic Focus in 2026
In 2026, we will continue to pursue our three strategic goals:
- Strengthening the Open Infrastructure: We will engage deeply in defining attribution in the context of AI, recognizing its foundational role in the commons. We will explore strategies for mandating credit and, where appropriate, compensation, while minimizing unintended consequences. This involves understanding legislative and regulatory environments and engaging stakeholders in acceptable tradeoffs.
- Defending a Thriving Creative Commons: We will continue our advocacy for open access to knowledge, focusing on sectors like education, science, and culture. We will support open science by evolving alongside the shift from traditional publications to preprints, modular outputs, and digital-first formats. We will also build on the Open Heritage Statement, encouraging UNESCO member states to support open heritage through formal channels.
- Centering Community: We will host public conversations with experts, advocates, and dissenters, developing resources based on these learnings. We will celebrate our 25th anniversary, emphasizing the importance of choice and credit in the age of AI.
Embracing the Future
As we navigate the complexities of the commons in the age of AI, we remain committed to our core values. We will continue to innovate, collaborate, and advocate, ensuring that the commons thrives and knowledge remains accessible to all. Join us on this journey as we celebrate our 25th anniversary and shape the future of sharing and access.
