A heartwarming story of hope and resilience unfolds in the Virunga Mountains, where a wild mountain gorilla named Mafuko has given birth to twins, a rare and remarkable event. This birth not only increases the Bageni family to a whopping 59 gorillas, making it the largest in the park, but also serves as a beacon of progress in the ongoing battle to conserve these endangered creatures.
Twins among mountain gorillas are an extraordinary occurrence, presenting unique challenges, especially during the early stages of life when infants are completely reliant on their mother for survival. Mafuko, at the impressive age of 22, has given birth to seven newborns, including a previous set of twins in 2016, who sadly did not survive. The entire global population of mountain gorillas, just over 1,000, is spread across the Virunga Mountains and the Bwindi Forest, with over a third calling the protected forests of Virunga National Park their home.
