Leyburn's Crime-Hit Public Toilets: A Transformation into a Visitor and Heritage Hub
Leyburn's former public toilet block, a victim of anti-social behavior and high operational costs, is set to undergo a remarkable transformation. With over £115,000 in funding secured, the Kelberdale toilets off Market Place will be revitalized into a vibrant visitor and heritage hub, offering a range of amenities and services.
The redevelopment will include a much-needed disabled toilet, ensuring accessibility for all. The funding will also facilitate the creation of a new Visit Leyburn website, promoting the town's attractions and local community services to visitors. This initiative aims to enhance Leyburn's appeal as a destination, fostering a sense of inclusivity and prosperity.
The project, known as the Accessible Leyburn project, extends beyond the hub itself. It involves improvements to the path from the Shawl to the nearby playground, with the installation of plastic matting and additional accessible seating. Thirty more accessibility audits of businesses and attractions in and around the town will be conducted, ensuring a comprehensive approach to accessibility.
Furthermore, the Access the Dales charity has generously donated a wheelchair scooter to the hub, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing mobility for individuals with disabilities. The town council invites residents and businesses to actively participate in the project by contributing content for the hub and website, fostering a sense of community involvement.
This transformation holds the potential to revitalize Leyburn's high street, making it a hub for the community and a welcoming destination for visitors. The town council's proactive approach, coupled with the generous funding, promises a brighter future for Leyburn, addressing the challenges posed by anti-social behavior and operational costs while creating a vibrant, inclusive space for all.
