Leah Courington, a high school graduate with an associate degree, began her freshman year at Texas A&M University in the fall of 2023. Her journey took a turn when she moved into Keathley Hall, where her health rapidly deteriorated within weeks of move-in day.
Courington's health crisis was severe, with symptoms including brain fog, extreme fatigue, chest pain, coughing, insomnia, migraines, skin and eye irritation, joint pain, gastrointestinal issues, and emotional distress. The mold exposure was so significant that the room was deemed "unfit for human occupancy" by an independent inspector.
The family raised concerns about a dark area in the dorm room and requested testing, but the university staff did not conduct the necessary swabs. This led to the family hiring a private mold inspector, who confirmed the presence of toxic mold and condemned the room and many of Leah's belongings.
Despite the severity of the situation, the lawsuit filed against Texas A&M was dismissed due to legal immunity. The court found that the university lacked notice because they did not test the mold, and the university's handling of the situation was criticized.
However, the case brought attention to a broader issue of mold in college dorms, which is a growing concern nationwide. Experts highlight the importance of regular cleaning, prompt spill cleanup, and immediate reporting of concerns to housing officials to prevent mold growth.
